Scientists want to create human-animal hybrids in experimental purposes or in response to a shortage of human eggs in order to isolate embryonic stem cells. They believe that using animal eggs, more available, they could create human-animal hybrids.
In 2008, the House of Lords rejected an amendment tabled by Lord Alton in the bill Fertilisation and Embryology human to ban the production of such hybrids, but they can not be produced for embryos that leave it « live » within 14 days (with implantation in utero prohibited), and after authorization by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authorityh (HFEA), if it considers the proposed research as necessary, and after considering other possible alternatives . The first two authorizations, data in the UK concerned cytoplasmic hybrids (or « cybrids » 2) 99.9% human and 0.1% animal (mitochondria respectively cows and rabbits).
