Monkeys (Latin imperial simius rather than classical Latin simia) are animals of the order of primates. Among primates, it is not easy to define from which the term monkey species is no longer adequate. Some believe that lemurs are monkeys, but strictly speaking, this term is now used to describe Haplorrhini. More narrowly still without tarsiers, this term refers to more than 260 species forming the infra-order Simiiformes which includes humans.
The first scientist to have argued that other primates could be related to men’s Giulio Cesare Vanini, before Charles Darwin in the 1600s. The assertion that man is a monkey is now commonplace, titles like « The man is a monkey like the others » highlight this fact.
