Individuals of the same colony are able to communicate crawling with agitation of their tails, and by sniffing with squeals like barking dogs to warn others of danger or to give the position of a predator . They live in families and young males become adults quickly driven out by the father to create their own home. They defend their burrows against other animals, and against other prairie dogs of another group, biting repeatedly, allowing the escape of the enemy, and yelling [ref. desired]. However, they may live « roommate » with other animals (squirrels, owls …). In case of danger, the prairie dog burrow can use the other families as a refuge. They have a monitoring system (posted on mounds mounted by them, they stand guard and warn of danger by shouting specific hazard in question).
